Years ago in 1996, when I started on the Internet, I was selling African curios, art and craft and mainly to the USA. As I am based in South Africa a lot of red tape was involved, especially with products that contained any wildlife component. On the one hand I needed veterinary certificates and export permits from South Africa and on the other hand I needed Fish & Wildlife clearance (USA) or Veterinary certificates (Europe). All these created long delays from the time of order to delivery. Not only that, the cost of delivery was horrendous because I needed to use agents to arrange for clearance in the USA and in Europe. One of my main suppliers in South Africa had a wholesale operation in Florida, USA where they offered many of the products I was selling at the time. Another major advantage was that their products were already cleared into the USA. So I sat down with these guys and came to an arrangement where they would deliver my orders in the USA, which meant that I didn't have to go through the rigmarole of permits and certificates and clearance. I could now deliver to my customers within a few days rather than 4 to 6 weeks! This arrangement work very well for some time until the forex rates made the export of these products non-viable at which time I closed that operation. During the time that this arrangement was in operation I could sell my products, get payment, pass on the order and pay the wholesale and delivery price, and have my orders delivered without touching a product. Often the setting up of a drop shipping arrangement is merely about keeping your eyes open for an opportunity. It may involve your current products and looking for ways to create new markets, even in other countries, using similar suppliers to your current suppliers. |
